First, I found it rather curious that the first ten stories posted on Dickert's promotion were little more than reprinting the press release written by SID Bill Stevens. Heck, a couple of the stories even included an error that Stevens corrected in a follow-up email. Is it possible this announcement came as such a surprise that no one had a rough draft covering the story?
Why the move less than 24-hours after Dickert led the Cougs to an Apple Cup win? It's hard to believe that there were a number of suitors calling for the services of Dickert. As good as he might be, his pedigree hardly screams, "Pick me! Pick me!", to Power 5 schools looking for a new head coach. Granted, there are plenty of programs in need of new leadership. Perhaps this snappy move is a way of signaling to both Dickert and Cougar Nation that WSU truly believes he's the best man for the job. It also makes hitting the recruiting trails Sunday a bit better for Wazzu coaches. They now have a solid answer when student-athletes and parents pose the question, "Who will be the head coach next season." The move also changes the dynamic on the practice field when the Cougs begin preparations for their bowl game. Players trying to make an impression during workouts are now auditioning for their head coach, not simply collecting video footage of practice to take with them into the transfer portal. It's possible this early move might encourage guys looking for more playing time to contact the football offices in Pullman.
Details of the contract extended to Dickert were not released yesterday, but one item was disclosed. The two parties of agreed in principle to a five-year deal. That's pretty much the going duration for new hires at Power 5 schools these days. Though the salary hasn't been released, you can expect the amount will place Dickert somewhere near the middle of Pac-12 head coach salaries. Chun paid both Mike Leach and Nick Rolovich top-tier salaries to keep them happy in Pullman. In the case of Dickert, Chun made him happy by just offering the deal.
No question one of the key factors in making Dickert the head coach of Cougar football was the leadership displayed by Dickert during his tenure as interim HC. Where his predecessor turned into a public relations nightmare, Dickert has been a calming influence both on and off the field. It could be that reason alone that prompted Chun to pull the trigger. Rolovich's refusal to take the Covid vaccine was the face of WSU for the months leading up to his firing. Within days of Dickert taking the reins, political clashes with the folks in Olympia were no longer associated with Wazzu.
I'd like to think the primary reason Dickert got the job was because of his ability to run a top-notch college football program. His record as interim HC was a modest 3-2. However, on closer inspection, it should be noted that the two losses were to Top 15 caliber teams, BYU and Oregon. Were it not for a missed extra point against BYU, the Cougs might have won that game. And based on locker room video, the guys seem to like playing for this guy.
