For the first time since the 1992-93 seasons, Washington State baseball has started 2-0 in consecutive seasons. It's still too early to make claims like, "Wazzu baseball is back to their glory days", but the team seems to be edging in that direction under Coach Brian Greene.
Southpaw Cole McMillan was impressive in his start by going five innings and giving up just one earned run. He faced twenty batters, striking out six of them. Coach Greene will take a performance like that every day of the week.
For the most part, Cougar bats were kept in check by Hawaii pitching. They managed seven hits, making the most of that modest offensive output by plating four guys leading to a final score of 4-2 in favor of the visiting Cougs. The one thing that jumps off the stat page for Greene's offense is the production from his number four and five hitters. Cleanup batter Justin Van De Brake and Jack Smith both left three runners on base. Opportunity missed.
Caden Kaelber was the fourth relief pitcher to take the mound for WSU. Kaelber hurled the final two scoreless stanzas, facing just eight batters and striking out a pair. He also wasn't about to give up any part of the plate and hit one batter just to prove that point. The other highlight for Cougar pitching was a total of nine strikeouts, one-third of the outs necessary to earn the victory.
The third game of the four-game series with Hawaii will be played Sunday afternoon.

The Washington State men's golf team posted a sixth-place finish in its first tournament of the spring, as the Cougars concluded the John Burns Intercollegiate carding 291 (+3) in the third round to finish the tournament with a three-round score of 2-under; 862 in Lihue, Hawaii.
"We played some nice golf this week. Having such a long break from the fall, it's hard to really know what we're going to get that first time out," said head Coach Dustin White. "There were a lot of good shots and the guys also bounced back after some mistakes. It's a solid week and gives us a lot to look forward to heading into Bandon Dunes."
The Washington State men's golf team will be back in action March 6-8, as the Cougars head to the Sheep Ranch Golf Club in Bandon, Oregon to play in the Bandon Dunes Championship.
