• On the heels of the massive faceplant by Cougar baseball this past weekend, there is some good news from WSU alum Lew Wright, Sr. Monday morning Wright and three of his buddies headed down to San Clemente to compete in the annual Chick Evans Scholar Tournament. Given the age of these four golfers, yes, they were competing in the senior division representing Minnesota, Florida, Cal Poly SLO, and Washington State. The site of the tournament was Bella Colina, one of the finest private country clubs in the Southern California region. Of the three 9-hole tracks at Bella Colina, the scramble play used the Muirfield and Carnoustie courses. Wright's team got off to a sluggish start which should be no surprise given the natural fog these players endure when pressed to do anything before 10am. They were just one-under-par after the first five holes due in part to a mild disaster on the fourth hole when none of the team could hit an approach shot on the green thus forcing a series of missed putts resulting in a bogey. However, is was at this point in the round when the Bloody Marys, bourbon, and beer began to kick in. The boys rallied with their "A" games and finished with a brilliant round of 61, eleven under par to notch a three-stroke victory. Their excellent finished was highlighted by an eagle on the final hole of play when Lew launched an approach shot about 22-feet right of the cup where one of his partners, Ken Casebier of Florida, calmly rolled in the putt cap off an outstanding round of golf.
